Ar ndóiche agus muid ag dul don obair seo faoin phleanáil teanga sna Rosa tá muid ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn siocar go gcreideann muid go bhfuil buntáistí móra ann do cheantar na Rosann de thairbhe a stádais agus a oidhreachta mar cheantar Gaeltachta. Ach ní thuigeann daoine i gcónaí cé chomh mór is atá na buntáistí a bhaineann leis an dátheangachas. Tá go leor taighde ann ó gach cearn den domhain a léiríonn na buntáistí seo, agus san fhíseán seo míníonn an tOllamh Antonella Sorace ó Ollscoil Dhún Éideann cuid de na firicí agus miotais a bhaineann le dátheangachas – go háiride don duine óg a fhaigheann an darna teanga sna luathbhlianta, bíodh sin sa bhaile nó i scoileanna tumoideachais. Gheobhaidh tú go leor cainteanna eile le hAntonella ar an ábhar seo ach a hainm a chuartú ar youtube.

Those of us involved in language planning in the Rosses are committed to promoting Irish in the area on account of the wide variety of benefits (such as Údarás na Gaeltachta attracting Randox and the likes to the area, Irish as a “unique selling point” for tourism, and so on). But the full extent of the advantages of bilingualism are not always appreciated, even by Irish speakers. In this video Professor Antonella Sorace of the University of Edinburgh explains some of the facts and debunks some common myths to do with bilingualism. A quick youtube search will give you many videos of her giving talking about these matters in more detail.

Professor Sorace is head of the Bilingualism Matters centre in the University Edinburgh. The instiution’s website has an informative FAQ page that answers questions parents often have about bilingualism: http://www.bilingualism-matters.ppls.ed.ac.uk/parents-questions/frequently-asked-questions/ – well worth a look!

Ó tharla go bhfuil an Clochán Liath ainmnithe mar bhaile seirbhíse Gaeltachta, rinne RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta rud beag taighde ar líon na ngnólachtaí sa bhailea bhfuil Gaeilgeoirí líofa fostaithe iontu. I measc na dtorthaí a bhí acu, fuair siad amach go bhfuil ar a laghad Gaeilgeoir amháin ag obair in 70% de ghnónna an bhaile – rud a bheas ina chúnamh mór do rath an phleanála teanga sa cheantar agus sna limistéir eile máguaird. Phléigh cathaoirleach choiste pleanála teanga na Rosann, Helena Mhic Laifeartaigh, Ben Ó Ceallaigh, an comhairleoir pleanála teanga agus Séamas Ó Gallachóir ó Údarás na Gaeltachta torthaí an tsuirbhé ar Barrscéalta le gairid.

With An Clochán Liath being recently announced as a Gaeltacht service town, RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta recently conducted a survey on the use of Irish in businesses in the town. Amongst the results, the survey found that 70% of the town’s businesses employ at least one fluent Irish speaker, a fact which will be of huge assistance to the implementation of the language plan for the Rosses and the surrounding areas. The Rosses language planning committee chairperson, Helena Mhic Laifeartaigh, the area’s language planning consultant Ben Ó Ceallaigh, and Séamas Ó Gallachóir from Údarás na Gaeltachta recently discussed the survey on RnaG’s Barrscéalta.
