Cruinniú faoin bhaile seirbhíse Gaeltachta – Gaeltacht service town meeting

Beidh an cruinniú tábhachtach seo ar siúl an tseachtain seo chugainn ar an Chlochán Liath. Beidh cainteoir ann ó Ghaillimh le Gaeilge, grúpa a oibríonn le gnólachtaí i nGaillimh atá ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn. Tá cáil bainte amach acu mar gheall ar an obair seo agus tá an Ghaeilge le feiceáil i siopaí na cathrach a bhuíochas lena ndea-obair.

Póstaer BSG - cruinniú eolais

This important meeting will take place next week. Gaillimh le Gaeilge have done tremendous work promoting the use of Irish by businesses in Galway city for some 30 years now, provinding translation and proof reading services, amongst many other projects that they run. Irish has a very visible presence in the city thanks to this, and the guest speaker will surely have lots of tips to share with us in the Rosses.

Buntáistí an dátheangachais / Advantages of bilingualism

Ar ndóiche agus muid ag dul don obair seo faoin phleanáil teanga sna Rosa tá muid ag iarraidh an Ghaeilge a chur chun cinn siocar go gcreideann muid go bhfuil buntáistí móra ann do cheantar na Rosann de thairbhe a stádais agus a oidhreachta mar cheantar Gaeltachta. Ach ní thuigeann daoine i gcónaí cé chomh mór is atá na buntáistí a bhaineann leis an dátheangachas. Tá go leor taighde ann ó gach cearn den domhain a léiríonn na buntáistí seo, agus san fhíseán seo míníonn an tOllamh Antonella Sorace ó Ollscoil Dhún Éideann cuid de na firicí agus miotais a bhaineann le dátheangachas – go háiride don duine óg a fhaigheann an darna teanga sna luathbhlianta, bíodh sin sa bhaile nó i scoileanna tumoideachais. Gheobhaidh tú go leor cainteanna eile le hAntonella ar an ábhar seo ach a hainm a chuartú ar youtube.

Tá an tOllamh Sorace i gceannas ar an institúid Bilingualism Matters agus tá liosta acu de cheisteanna coitianta a bhíonn ag tuismitheoirí faoin dátheangachas anseo: http://www.bilingualism-matters.ppls.ed.ac.uk/parents-questions/frequently-asked-questions/

Those of us involved in language planning in the Rosses are committed to promoting Irish in the area on account of the wide variety of benefits (such as Údarás na Gaeltachta attracting Randox and the likes to the area, Irish as a “unique selling point” for tourism, and so on). But the full extent of the advantages of bilingualism are not always appreciated, even by Irish speakers. In this video Professor Antonella Sorace of the University of Edinburgh explains some of the facts and debunks some common myths to do with bilingualism. A quick youtube search will give you many videos of her giving talking about these matters in more detail.

Professor Sorace is head of the Bilingualism Matters centre in the University Edinburgh. The instiution’s website has an informative FAQ page that answers questions parents often have about bilingualism: http://www.bilingualism-matters.ppls.ed.ac.uk/parents-questions/frequently-asked-questions/ – well worth a look!

Lá comhairliúcháin ar an 12 Márta – Consultation day on 12th March

Tá Coiste pleanála teanga na Rosann ag tabhairt cuiridh do spriocghrúpaí difriúla a bheidh an-tábhachtach do rath an phlean chun teacht chuig Ionad Teampaill Chróine ar an 12 Márta le páirt a ghlacadh i ngrúpaí fócais chun tuairimí na ngrúpaí seo faoi thodhchaí na Gaeilge sa cheantar a fháil. Tabharfaidh seo tuiscint níos doimhe dúinn ar riachtanais earnálacha éagsúla sa cheantar ná a fhaightear sna ceistneoirí atá á scaipeadh ar thithe an limistéir faoi láthair. Tá súil againn go bhfeicfidh muid go leor agaibh ar an lá!

The Rosses language planning committee is inviting key target groups who will be particularly important for our language plan’s success to attend one of our focus groups on Monday 12th March. This will allow us a more detailed insight into the needs of specific sectors of the community than can be gained from the questionnaire currently being distributed to houses in the area. We hope to see many of you in Ionad Teampaill Chróine on the day!
